3 Trickiest Parts of Storytelling (and what to do instead)
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗢𝗣 3 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗦 𝗜 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚
1. It takes forever to think of the "right" stories
2. It feels ridiculous talk about yourself all the time
3. It seems like a waste of time because you're not talking about the "value" content
Believe me, I totally get it. When I first heard about storytelling several years ago, I was skeptical. It seemed fluffy and counterintuitive. Plus, I really didn't feel like sharing all my deep personal life experiences with total strangers (no offense 😉).
I thought, that can't be all there is. So I dug deep into learning all about storytelling. I read books, listened to speakers, took classes, tried out different techniques with my own content and the content of my clients. Literally all the things. It was a hugely enlightening journey!
And I have to tell you, all of these complaints are swept away when you understand one fundamental reality of storytelling.
Here it is...
𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Connecting ideas together to increase the bond between you and your audience, increase their immediate understanding of what you're sharing, and increase their long-term retention of knowledge by triggering the right kinds of emotional reactions.
But again, it's not about you. The stories don't event have to be about you. Heck, they don't have to be about anyone you know! Storytelling elements are a whole lot simpler than a lot of us are led to believe. And tapping into them is a total game-changer.
